The Last of Us Season 2: Full Episode Release Dates and What We Know So Far
After a first season that swept ratings, critics, and awards, The Last of Us returns with a second season that’s shorter but just as ambitious. Streaming platform Max has confirmed the premiere will take place on Monday, April 14, 2025, and that this season will consist of seven episodes, two fewer than the original.
The series once again features Neil Druckmann (creator of the original video game) and Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) as its creative leads, alongside a group of top-tier directors who have worked on shows such as Succession, Watchmen, Loki, and The Boys.
Why Only Seven Episodes?
According to Mazin and Druckmann, the decision to reduce the episode count from nine to seven was driven by narrative pacing and faithfulness to the source material. This second season adapts part of The Last of Us Part II, one of the most ambitious and emotionally complex video games in recent years.
The goal is to divide the story across multiple seasons, allowing the creators to delve deeper into the characters, their choices, and the consequences they face in an increasingly brutal post-apocalyptic world.
Full Episode Release Schedule
Each episode will premiere at 3:00 AM (Central European Time) every Monday on Max. This is the official schedule confirmed so far:

Each chapter will have a distinct artistic direction, adapting the various tones and time jumps that define the video game.

What Will This Season Cover?
Season 2 will explore events from The Last of Us Part II, although it will not adapt the entire game. It’s expected to focus on the years following the end of Season 1, introducing new key characters like Abby and Lev, while further developing the relationship between Ellie and Dina.
The story will be darker, more introspective, and emotionally charged, dealing with themes such as trauma, revenge, and hatred, but also forgiveness, identity, and love in all its forms. Fidelity to the game will be high, though certain scenes and narrative structures may be reinterpreted to work better for television.
A Solid Cast and New Additions
Bella Ramsey (Ellie) and Pedro Pascal (Joel) will return to lead the cast, although this season will place even more focus on Ellie as the central protagonist. New actors have also been cast to portray fundamental characters from the second game, though details remain scarce due to spoiler concerns.
The creative team has emphasized that the approach will be bold and uncompromising, just as it was in the original game. Expect the emotional weight to once again be a core signature of the series.
How Many Seasons Will The Last of Us Have?
Neil Druckmann has hinted that the full story of The Last of Us Part II will be split into two or possibly three seasons, opening the door to a third and even a fourth season. Future production will depend on the success of this second chapter, but all signs point to The Last of Us solidifying itself as one of the most important series of the decade.
